KAPPY and the Mayhew Animal Home
As from June 17th 2005, KAPPY will be providing emergency veterinary cover for the Mayhew Animal Home in Kensal Green, London.
This emergency cover will be extended to both clients of the Mayhew Animal Home out in the community and to the many dogs, cats and rabbits resident at the home. Arrangements have been made with suitable local veterinary practices to which KAPPY will transfer any patients thought to be in need of more extensive or long-term management.

FIRST MONTH UPDATE
Please note that contrary to the information in KAPPY’s leaflets, the first KAPPY ambulance will in fact be staffed full time by a veterinary surgeon with additional staffing provided as and when necessary.
The first KAPPY ambulance (K999 PPY) was launched to service London and the surrounding areas on Monday 4th April 2005 following features in a number of local newspapers (including the Camden Chronicle, the Wandsworth Borough News and the Slough Observer) and on ITV’s London Tonight.
As with any new service, things will take time to get up to full speed but KAPPY is steadily helping more and more pets.
A number of existing patients have been transferred especially to referral centres. These have included:
- A dog in congestive heart failure that was transported with oxygen supplementation
- A cat in kidney failure that was transported on her drip via an infusion pump
- A number of dogs with spinal problems some of whom received further pain relief en route
KAPPY has also attended to a number of pet emergencies at home including a dog with septic pneumonia, a dog in congestive heart failure and a cat that had been hit by a car.
